Your page takes several seconds to load.
They are glowing less brightly now.
Desperate to solve their problem they stick with your slow loading page only to discover that the information they are so desperate to find is delivered in a page design that does not fit the screen size of the device they are using.
This is enough to distract them from their aim.
In disappointment and cursing your ineptitude they abandon your website and return to their search.
Ouch you just lost the opportunity to influence a real person, with a real problem and real money in their pocket that actually chose you as a potential saviour. They might have become a life long, repeat buying, recommend you to everyone they meet, customer. In a flash they were there then gone. It might have been better for your reputation that they didn't come at all, now they have left with a negative view of your website and business. And this could be happening tens, hundreds or even thousands of times every 24 hours.
The chance of you ever influencing that person again are almost zero [You will, quite probably, never again get the chance to talk to him/her] and more gruelling than that you have probably just delivered this ready to buy human into the arms of one of your competitors. A competitor who maybe suffered like you until they did something about it.
The important thing is you can do something about this digital (financial) self harm. A lot of what can be done to improve this situation drastically is the application of some knowledge and a heap of common sense. Best of all it is your customers who have most of the answers to getting this right.
